Single Of The Year #2- Elbow: Grounds For Divorce

. Thursday, December 11

2008 has a massive crush on Elbow. The Seldom Seen Kid album bathed in a sea of 9/10 reviews, no festival was complete without then and 'One Day Like This' replaced 'Hoppipola' as the emotive TV crescendo music of choice. To top off the year of their lives they won the Mercury Music prize beating Laura Marling, Robert Plant and Burial to the prize. The year started though with 'Grounds For Divorce', the first single from 'Seldom Seen Kid' and an absolute behemoth of Northern rock 'n' soul. Guy Garvey has never sounded as powerful and whistful as he does here and the music is equally as rousing- Elbow are known for their beauty (musically speaking) but this showed they can turn it up a notch and really blow away the cobwebs. One song a year like this will see me right.
